Harbor (2026)
My most recent work was a delightful collaboration with the brilliant artist and photographer Anastasia Samoylova.
Harbor presents Anastasia Samoylova’s new photographic project, commissioned and produced by Gallerie d’Italia, and dedicated to seven European port cities: Genoa, Venice, Rotterdam, Marseille, Lisbon, Athens and Istanbul.
I composed an original musical score inspired by her images; and she in turn sequenced the images to the score to build this collaborative video work. The work premiered at Gallerie d’Italia Torino on 21 October 2026.

Original music: Clive Chang
Created for Anastasia Samoylova’s exhibition at Gallerie d’Italia in Turin, Harbor brings her photographs of European port cities into dialogue with an original score by composer Clive Chang. Working from the photographs, Chang developed musical passages that respond to the oscillation—and negotiation—between water and metal, stillness and movement, nature and industry. Samoylova, in turn, shaped the image sequence around the score’s textural progression, dynamic contrasts, and shifting intensities.
The work flows through repetition and juxtaposition, allowing connections between places to emerge gradually. Spacious passages build toward a repeated, hammering piano motif that evokes the force and persistence of industrial activity. The recurring presence of horns and percussion conjures the unrelenting rhythms of maritime commerce. Throughout, even moments of calm retain an underlying tension, echoing the photographs’ uneasy coexistence of beauty and infrastructure, shelter and exposure, arrival and departure. Together, image and sound invite a sustained encounter with the waterfront as a place of continual transition.
